The second round in Group C could decide the future of some EURO 2008 favorites. After not too shinny form against Romania France will face the team who has showed the best football at EURO 2008 so far. Van Basten’s team impressed against Italy and now have a chance to qualify for quarterfinals after just two rounds.

If you try to make a team of the first round I bet that you will pick up the most players from Oranje squad. At first some experienced players like Van Bronckhorst and Van der Sar have a became a real leaders on the pitch and directly had influence on result. Van Bronckhorst showed his huge potential in counterattacks, experienced goalkeeper saved a Pirlo’s shoot and make opportunity for counter attack which resulted with goal. Runner-ups from the last World Cup didn’t impress in their the first appearance at EURO 2008. France team was just the shadow of the power full team who took silver spot at Germany two years ago. It was obvious against Romanians that they don’t have a idea how to make pressure and chances in attack. In my opinion problem is in the mid-field where their creativity is stopped with explicit tasks which every player has to do. Controversial Domenech’s decision sometimes make all team confused. I believe that his future on France bench is on question mark. Only some huge changes in heads of his players could take back France team on the position where they deserved. Huge quality is dropped down due to some astrological aspects that Domenech uses. The most of players are unsatisfied with positions in the team and it is hard to believe that they could give their best in these circumstances.

As you can conclude I will go with Oranje here. It is hard to bet against the France team, but without form they just have names which will build up the bookmaker’s odds. Austria will start EURO 2008 competition as one of the hosts at Ernst Happel stadium at Vienna. Their rival will be one of the favorites from the shadow – Croatia. Battle in Serie A is over, Inter is new-old champion in the season which was full of suspicious referee decisions. On the other hand Inter supporters can finally relax. They had though period in the finish of the campaign, primarily thanks to Materazzi who failed to covert penalty kick in the Scudetto, just the ten minutes before the end of the crucial match against Siena. However, Mancini’s team beat Parma in the last round and won third Scudetto in a row. Key man once again was talented, magnificent Irbahimovic, who scored two goals in second half and sent Parma in Serie B. Now, Mancini has another chance to prove that he is the right man for Nerroazzuri. There are a lot of rumors that he could be sacked this summer, but it will be difficult with two domestic trophies. Anyway, we could expect similar line up like against Parma in the last round. It is questionable how Inter is prepared for this match due to a lot of speculations about new signings. Maybe motivation isn’t on the desired level and Mancini has to make right decision about some positions in the team.

Due to the fact that final match will be played at Olimipco and that winner will be decided after one match I believe in Roma’s triumph. Spaletti already has shown that he know how to prepare team for important matches. In their last match in this season they will try to stay unbeaten at Bergamo and finish season with positive mind in their heads.

Roma - Atalanta

He has showed that he could play successfully for a few seasons more, so rumors that he could be transferred to Palermo have a sense.

Almost, twenty years without title is long period for fanatic supporters but success Champions League satisfied them. So what’s the difference playing at Europe and in domestic competition? The main difference is that you have to win away from home if you want Premiership title. Benitez is great manager but his style of football it too defensive for some bigger results. In CL there are always second leg so with defensively oriented tactics you should make a result. Sometimes one goal is enough for next stage. Main worry for him will be Essiene absence, while Lampard will be in the team, after two weeks due to the mother’s illness. Strength in the midfield is the crucial for success in this match, so Lampard needs full support from Obi, Malouda and Ballack to stop Reds. Offensive tasks will also depends of him and if he find away to perform fluidity in midfield, Chelsea will have chance to use space in Liverpool’s back.

Anyway, the first match won’t decide who will travel to Moscow to super final. So I don’t expect attractive football. On the other hand domestic team is in must win situation. Victory at Majestic stadium came in the right moment, so they still believe in survival. Confidence is flying high so we can expect that Cottagers will try to press hard and try to collect other decisive points. Good results against Merseysiders in previous season are another big reason to believe in positive result. All players are available so Grant believes that Blues could continue good tradition at Goodison Park. Chelsea have won four from last five matches against Everton.

On the other hand domestic team couldn’t be satisfied with only point from match against Birmingham. Now they have another opportunity to keep their advantage in front Portsmouth at fifth table position. In same time supporters dream about fourth table spot where currently sitting their main rival Liverpool. However, Toffees have to pull up hard and overcome a bad form if they want to stay in race for Champions League. More realistic scenario is UEFA Cup table spot, just behind the big four. Some key players are injured, so coach Moyes will have a real headache in mid-field. Cahill will be unavailable till the end of the season, while Arteta and Osman are sidelined for this occasion.
